From the smoky afterglow of a chaotic St. Patrick’s Day in Stuttgart, the first sparks of the mixed-genre cover band False Friends caught fire—flickering uncertainly at first, then gathering warmth and weight until they formed the seven-piece ensemble that stands today.
An eclectic gathering of Stuttgart-based musicians from Ireland, England, the US, Croatia, India and Germany, we’re hobbyists by trade but wanderers by melody, slipping from our everyday lives into songs that carry us somewhere a little distant, a little dream-shadowed.
The trumpet rises like a bright flare above the restless guitars. The banjo mutters beneath the violin’s moody wail. A warm, steady bass cushions the insistent pulse of the cajon. Voices weave in and out of the call of the Irish whistles, answering with echoes that feel both old and new.Through this varied tangle of tunes, we try to bring ceol agus craic (music and good times in Irish) wrapped in a slightly darker shimmer.
We’re genuinely thrilled to make our debut on the storied stage of Galao, bringing with us a set steeped mostly in Irish tradition—songs that dip into the ancient, the modern, and the unexpectedly enchanting corners of Irish music. And perhaps, with a wink to the season, even a Christmas anthem or two.
Our name, False Friends, nods to the pitfalls of language learning: those deceptive words that appear familiar but twist into different meanings upon closer inspection. It’s a subtle homage to the professional and academic paths that shaped each of us long before the music brought us together.
So on the 16th of December, we hope to offer you the gift of Irish music—something heartfelt, haunting, and honest—and not leave you poisoned to it in the years to come!
