Working with guitars, cello, effect pedals and contact microphones, he initially experimented with sound and noise to explore the origin of vibrations through purely analog means.

Following his early guitar noise experiments, he developed sound pieces using field recordings, analog synthesizers, no-input mixers, and a ReVox B77 tape machine.

With hundreds of shows across Europe and worldwide since 2010, his work is constantly shaped by new environments and spaces. He has performed at numerous performance festivals, art events, and galleries - both as a musician and performance artist - and has been touring as a solo sound artist since 2022.

Additionally, Mathieu Sylvestre has composed soundtracks for visual artists such as Wolfgang Petrick and Saskia Edens (CH) and worked to provide sound design on live shows in collaboration with performance artists such as Frédéric Krauke (DE), NoMass -contemporary dance- (GR), Physical Poets -Butoh- (JP), Non Grata -performance art- (EE) on the Diverse Universe Tour from 2012 to 2019 and music/sound design of the art film Symbiosis (dir. S. Weber – 2024).

Concert | Orphic Rites

Orphic Rites reimagines the semi-divine, mythological musician Orpheus as an electro-acoustic performer. Orpheus’ music was, by its very subject matter, of universal significance. His harmonic artistry was inspired by the harmonic motion of the universe itself, the Neoplatonic “Music of the Spheres.” In the Middle Ages, the Byzantine scholar John Tzetzes recounted the natural world’s attraction to Orpheus:

Greatest of all musicians whom light has seen, so much so that he charmed stones, beasts, growing things and things of all natures with his music, and drew them behind him.

As sonically depicted in this premiere performance, the prophetic musician arrives within the heart of nature, where he soon attracts all living beings and inanimate objects through his alluring sonic incantations. This is Orpheus far from the Underworld: He is the magical musical prophet, whose music concerns the heavens above. He sings a universal story without words.

Featuring analog modular synthesizers and audio-responsive video, Orphic Rites is presented as a live, semi-improvised musical ritual—a sonic meditation on the human spirit within the cosmos, an Orphic theme variously expressed across time, space, and technology.
